New Years!!

I can't believe it will be 2014! I still think its the 90's ha! Where does the time go? I remember my Dad always saying that the older you get, the faster the time goes. That sure is true. It seems to me that my kids are growing up at lightening speed. I try to savor all the moments with them because in no time they will be gone. What will I do?! I hope you all have a great year to come. I am sure most of us will have our "New Years Resolutions" and swear we will stick by them. I know I will! At least I can try to anyway.

I love these little Vintage knick knacks.

My Parents always had New Years parties when I was growing up and still do! Steamed shrimp and drinks were on the menu. We try to carry that tradition on. What is on your New Years eve menu?

I love looking at these older pictures and seeing the clothes, hairstyles and decor...

Not sure who this lovely Lady is, she sure is beautiful though.

Party time!! My parents always had the annoying things that made noise. They were worse than the kids. Still are!

Barbie

Every little girl has dreamed of having a Barbie, I know I did. Unfortunately, my parents didn't have a lot of money when we were growing up so I always went to my friend Kristen's house to play with hers. Kristen was the girl who had everything, a built in pool, a bedroom to die for, all the Barbies one could want AND all the clothes! I had a blast at her house. Eventually I did get my very own Barbie, Peaches and Cream! I was so happy! I remember how gorgeous her dress was, I had that doll for years. I can't remember what happened to her? I now watch my own little girl play with her Barbies, I can't help but find myself sitting on the floor dressing them, brushing their hair and changing their shoes. Some things stay the same.

I always wanted the big Barbie Dream house. I thought it was so awesome! I would look at it in the Christmas Catalog from Sears and dream that I would get it!! Sadly I never did. Thats ok, I enjoy watching our daughter play with hers.

I love these Barbie Cases, we have got our daughter one but its nothing like these older vintage ones. I would love to find one of these.

I never had a Ken doll or any male doll. This is pretty cool. I bet it would be nice for a collector to have.

I LOVE the Vintage Barbies, I wish I could have all of them in a case! I love the details in their clothing, so cool. Barbies are not the same today in my opinion.

I think a lot of people remember Skipper Barbie. She is pretty cute.

Walt Disney The Story Of Menstruation

I admit when I first saw this I laughed pretty hard at the tone of the voice the narrator used and how clean cut it was. This is supposedly the 1st ever movie to use the word "Vagina" in it. It was passed around to High Schools first with pamphlets from 1946-51 then I read it was banned.

Wow, there is nothing remotely bad in this!! I guess it was such a conservative time. Very different than from today. I think they need to use more stuff like this today in school. We are homeschoolers and this would be something I would use. Its hard enough to talk to our kids about sex, periods and puberty so why not have clean cut videos like this that we can share and can help us to explain. Yes it may be out of date but the basis of the story never changes, just the tones, the clothing, the music and maybe even the way they talk. I remember in school learning all about this stuff. My parents were not the type to talk to me about any of this. I guess it was hard for them since it was a much harder time for their parents, my grandparents, to explain sex, periods ect... Why is it such a dirty thing for most to talk about? It shouldn't be so hard. I think for me its the embarrassment that goes with it more than the not wanting to talk to them. I want my kids to be educated about sex and safe. I want them to know the dangers but also know its a beautiful thing when shared with the RIGHT person.

Of course I want all my kids to wait until they are married to have sex and I don't want my daughter to get her first menstrual cycle until she is atleast 18 but I am a realist. I know thats not always how the world works. I can only pray and trust God that I've taught them the right way and they will make wise decisions. So, in the meantime, I'm going to take advantage of this kind of stuff even if it is a little outdated.

Aunt Bee's Recipes

I posted a picture of one of my favorite cookbooks today, Aunt Bee's, and received an overwhelming response with request for some of her recipes. I picked out a few that I thought everyone would like. Here they are.

This breadstick recipe is really easy and good with some garlic butter brushed on them right before you take them out of the oven.

Oh my gosh, who doesn't LOVE a good old fashioned Apple Pie?!

Um, who doesn't LOVE Fried Chicken AND Apple Pie?!! You have to make both of these for a good Sunday dinner!

Here is a recipe for Dumplings, I have got most people private messaging me requesting this one.

You need to have a good BBQ recipe for the Summer. Its a must!

I remember watching "The Help", one of my favorite movies, and the only thing Mrs. Celia Foote could make for her Husband was Corn Pone.....I can't wait to try it!

I don't know about you but on a hot day when I don't feel like cooking, this is something that is perfect!

Last but not least, I have got quite a few request to dig this recipe out of the book, here it is. Enjoy.

Summertime memories

There is something about the Summer that instantly brings me back to being a kid. Its a combination of things, the warm nights, swimming, fire flies, camping, camp fires, roasting marshmallows, riding bikes and getting into mischief. I was very fortunate to have close friends as a young girl and teenager that I still talk to and see to this day. I think we all have a few people that when we think of them we are transported to a time where we were carefree. Its funny how a certain smell or song becomes a time machine to your childhood. I am listing some things that remind me of my childhood.

2 Of my favorite movies.

When I was growing up Madonna came on the scene and took over! I wore an iron on Madonna T-Shirt to the Ocean one Summer and it was so hot the print melted onto my bathing suit! Good times!

I remember buying this sunblock in purple and loved it!! I have pictures of me with it all over my face.

I loved this Barbie!! Peaches and Cream.

My favorite perfume, I still wear it!

I loved OP Shorts, who didn't?

Jellys!!

LOVED these bracelets.

Renting VHS Tapes and having Sleepovers

Catching lightening bugs

I still remember my Dad buying this and putting it in the yard, he would slide with us.

I remember watching this with my BFF.

We literally made ourselves sick riding this at the local Carnival.

The "hot guy" in our neighborhood had a Camaro. Its my favorite car, everyone has a "older hot brother" of their friend growing up.

Heart. We wore this album out! Heck, I still do!

                                            Smells so good!!

Pineapple Angel Food Cake

I LOVE being able to mix up some recipes and make something that everyone likes. I found this recipe a long time ago through Weight Watchers. I love angel food cake. My whole house loves to eat it with some type of fruit on it and cool whip, this was the best of both worlds so it worked great!!

1 box of angel food cake
1 can of crushed pineapple
Whip cream or cool whip

Mix the pineapple chucks with the juice and the dry cake mix together, pour in a pan or cupcake liners and bake at 350 for about 30 min or until done. I top ours off with cool whip or whipping cream. So good and refreshing.

Enjoy!

Duck and Cover

During the 50s & 60s there was a great fear of a Nuclear Attack from Russia on the United States. Children in classrooms all over were made to watch "Bert the Turtle" and the short film of how they should react if there was an attack on the U.S. This short film was part of the Duck and Cover public awareness campaign. First you duck and cover then very tightly cover the back of your head. This was what you were instructed to do should we ever be in the situation of attack. There is a part in the movie where a young boy is told that the Atomic Flash will cause a burn on you far worse than any sunburn you should ever have.

Fallout shelter sales went through the roof during this time, they consisted of a telephone, toilet and the basic things one would need to survive. Some of these shelters were made in the corner of your basement and were a few hundred dollars and others were made by digging a trench about 4 feet under ground in your yard. The fear of this kind of attack was so great during this time that there have been many references in movies from that era, commercials, school books ect...

Fear gripped many people during this time. Imagine living in a time of great fear from Nuclear Attack with NO Facebook, Twitter, or 24 hours a day news on any channel. Your only source of news would be a breakthrough on TV, if you had one, or being at work or school and hearing the sirens. How scary? I have heard a siren once about 10 years ago when we had a tornado warning and I can't begin to tell you how scary and chaotic it got, we NEVER heard anything like that before and it scares people to death! We are blessed to live in a time where we can receive warnings of things to come. I know many people poke fun or giggle at some of the things of the 50s and 60s but we need to remember that they were not as advanced as we are today and it must have been a frightening time for parents, children and people all over.

Question for Retro Wifey followers

Dear Retro Wifey,
I saw your post last night about the family on TV with the extremely disrespectful kids and wanted to ask for some advice since I am in the same boat. I have 4 children ages 16, 14, 10 and 4. The biggest problem I have is with my 10 year old who thinks that she can tell me no whenever she likes, yell at me and be mean to her siblings whenever things do not go her way. I have tried EVERYTHING, and I mean I have tried it all!! I don't know what else to do. I am told from some people she will outgrow it, she is more emotional than the other kids, its her personality, blah blah. She does well in School, gets great grades and is very smart and thriving except in her relationships with her family. Some days its very hard on me and my husband because of the constant fighting with the kids and her attitude stresses all of us. What else can I do? We love her dearly, she is just very difficult and I feel horrible in saying so, but its the truth....I would LOVE to hear from some other parents who may be going through the same thing or who have that one child who is driven by emotions, its very hard to fix. Thank you so much in advance for anyone who offers advice. I appreciate it greatly and I LOVE your page and blog xoxo

Ready for Summer?? I am!

I can remember when I was a Teenager shopping for bathing suits were the first thing on my list every Summer!! My Mom would take us to Hecht's or Macy's and we would look at them and try a million on. Of course she wouldn't allow us to wear anything too "skimpy" as she would say. I love the old bathing suits, they are so sexy and reveal MUCH less. I am not going to lie, I wore my fair share of Bikini's before I had kids, now a nice vintage suit to hide some of the skin is right up my alley!!

Look at those prices!

                                                         I love Pastels.

Love these!! Look how sexy they are!

I love these suits. The yellow is so pretty! I really like the one on the right the best. Perfect for Summer!

Women definitely started to show more skin in the 60s. I love the patterns and the colors!!

No blog of bathing suits is complete without a picture of Marilyn.

                                                And here is Jayne Mansfield.
